Published on the occasion of her retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2011-200, this monograph documents nearly 800 black-and-white photographs created over nine years by American photographer Francesca Woodman.
A photographer from the age of 13, Woodman’s surrealist images explore the female body, often through a distinctive form of self-portraiture. Her figures appear semi-obscured, sometimes nude, sometimes clothed, creating playful yet intimate scenes drawing inspiration from artists such as Man Ray and Claude Cahun, while circumventing traditional portrait photography.
