Francesca Woodman
Published on the occasion of her retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2011-200, this monograph documents nearly 800 black-and-white photographs created over nine years by American photographer Francesca Woodman.
A photographer from the age of 13, Woodman’s surrealist images explore the female body, often through a distinctive form of self-portraiture. Her figures appear semi-obscured, sometimes nude, sometimes clothed, creating playful yet intimate scenes drawing inspiration from artists such as Man Ray and Claude Cahun, while circumventing traditional portrait photography.
Woodman’s untimely death at the age of 22 meant she never witnessed the lasting impact of her work. Her photographs continue to resonate with new generations of photographers. Out of print. Item #2114.
