Mono Lake Site / Nonsite (with Envelope)

The flyer for Smithson's February 1-27, 1969 exhibit at Dwan Gallery, New York. One side is printed with the exhibition dates and venue, the other with a sliver of a map running from Mono Lake, California to New York City, the "site" and "nonsite" for the work. Smithson, Michael Heizer and Nancy Holt traveled to Mono Lake in July 1968 and filmed their visit. Holt and Smithson originally planned to edit the footage together, but the film was put aside until 2004 when it was edited by Holt for the Smithson Retrospective at MoCA Los Angeles. In the footage, Smithson is seen collecting cinders from the volcanic hills on the shores of the lake, which were used to make his 1968 sculpture "Mono Lake Nonsite." Also includes the scarce original envelope used to mail the flyer. Envelope is machine addressed and postmark stamped on the front. Item #636.

Condition: Fine, folded as issued; includes mailing envelope; 1" tear to envelope flap.
