Alice Louise Waters is an American chef, restaurateur, food writer, and author. In 1971, she opened Chez Panisse, the groundbreaking restaurant in Berkeley, California, famous for its role in pioneering the farm-to-table movement and for pioneering California cuisine.
David Lance Goines was born in 1945 in Grants Pass, Oregon to a civil engineer father and an artist and calligrapher mother. He attended UC Berkeley, and in 1968 he founded Saint Hieronymus Press in the same Berkeley printshop where he had learned his trade. There he remained for the rest of his working career. Goines helped define the aesthetic of Berkeley’s counterculture, beginning with his images for Chez Panisse, the French restaurant opened by Alice Waters. He considered himself a craftsman and rejected the title of artist. Goines died in 2023.
