Bas Jan Ader
An edition of 1,500 copies published on the occasion of the 1999 Bas Jan Ader exhibition at the Art Gallery, University of California, Irvine, where Bas Jan Ader taught, exhibited and created work. With essays by Thomas Crow and Jan Tumlir, and curated by Bard Spence, this collection of works, writings and diary entries offers an intimate reflection on Ader’s life and his brief but poignant artistic career.
Before his untimely disappearance at the age of 33, while attempting to sail across the Atlantic from Massachusetts to England in a 13-foot boat as part of the three-part performance In Search of the Miraculous, Ader’s practice increasingly engaged themes of vulnerability and emotional intensity. His performances often operate with a sense of ambiguity, inviting viewers to question the sincerity and emotional transparency central to works such as I’m Too Sad to Tell You. This melancholic sensibility has, in turn, contributed to ongoing speculation regarding the circumstances of his disappearance. Scarce. Item #2107.
