Martine Syms: Boon

One of 400 copies published on the occasion of American multimedia artist Martine Syms’ 2019 exhibition at the Secession Building in Vienna. The work is modeled after the walls of Simpson’s Record Shop in Detroit, which owner Dorothy Simpson covered with photographs, which were added to by community members and neighbors.

While Syms’ Secession installation highlights Black-owned businesses as sites of interdependence and self-determination, this publication focuses on the photographic element of Simpson’s Record Shop, bringing together found photographs, many taken by Syms’ father, to engage with and recontextualize anonymous images.

Together, these photographs exist in two forms: first with the original photographer, and then again through the artist, who reanimates the stagnant archive and renders it into an active field of thought. Out of print. Item #2102.

Condition: Near Fine, with a small bump to top of spine.
