Matthew Wong: Blue
One of 2,000 copies published on the occasion of self-taught Canadian painter Matthew Wong’s final exhibition at KARMA gallery in New York. Wong’s oil and gouache paintings, created during the last year of his life (2019), center the blueness of blue, exploring affect and inherent nostalgia on both a personal and collective level. In conversation with Wong’s earlier series of daylit paintings, these somber landscapes and interiors, often modeled after Sicilian landscapes he visited in 2018 and 2019, form the Blue series as a coda, playing with mood, intimacy and abyssal space.
