Mid-Century Sail to Japan Poster (Circa 1960)

A mid-century travel poster for the American Mail Line, which operated cargo ships between the Pacific Northwest and Japan. The American Mail Line was a Seattle-based commercial steamship service active from the 1920s through the mid-1970s that also offered passenger travel on their vessels. Many cargo ships during the period were built to also accommodate a small number of passengers for tourist travel. Before containerization, ships sometimes spent weeks in port being hand-loaded, allowing passengers and crew extended time to explore foreign cities.

The composition reflects key elements of mid-century modern design, including bold color, streamlined imagery and playful typography. Item #2095.

Condition: Very Good+, with light edgewear and a few surface dimples.
