Che Guevara Oversize Evergreen Review Poster (1968)
A huge poster reproduction of American artist Paul Davis' iconic painting of Che Guevara. The image was created for the cover of the February 1968 issue of the leftist journal Evergreen Review in the months following Guevara's death in October 1967. In July of 1968 the offices of Grove Press, the publisher of Evergreen Review, were bombed with a hand grenade by anti-Castro Cubans, thought to be in retaliation for publishing Guevara's diaries and the saint-like cover image. Grove Press owner Barney Rosset later filed a lawsuit alleging the bombing was backed by the CIA.
This is thought to be a 1968 original of the oversize Evergreen Review poster that was distributed around New York City for display in subway advertisements and elsewhere, promoting the publication. Here the bottom 1/4 of the poster with the text "The Spirit of Che lives in the new Evergreen" has been removed. A copy of the full poster is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK) and the dimensions and proportions of this poster match the sizing if the lower text portion were removed.
