The Model and the Vietnamese Woman Silkscreen Poster (Circa 1975)
The circa 1975 Women's Graphic Collective of Chicago's silkscreen reprint of Cuban artist Frémez's 1968 poster "La Modelo y La Vietnamita" (The Model and the Vietnamese Woman). José Gómez Fresquet, known as Frémez, was born in Havana in 1939 and was an influential graphic artist and designer. His work was influenced by pop art and contemporary graphics. He died in Havana in 2007.
"La Modelo y La Vietnamita" contrasts a fashionable Western woman with an injured Vietnamese female guerrilla fighter, and stands out as a landmark example of Cuban poster art, representing solidarity with the Vietnamese people while it critiques Western imperialism.
The Women's Graphics Collective of Chicago was a feminist, silkscreen printing collective founded in the early 1970s that created political posters supporting social issues such as the Women's Liberation Movement, labor, anti-imperialism, reproductive rights, and feminist sisterhood. It operated through the 1980s.
The poster is in the collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba, and The Center for the Study of Political Graphics, among others.
