When History Cannot Be Written with a Pen...¡El Salvador Vencera! Poster (Circa 1985)

An El Salvador solidarity poster expressing support for the country during its twelve-year civil war. The design features a stylized depiction of a soldier silhouetted in front of a wall covered in revolutionary graffiti, based on a photograph by José Lavanderos. Above the image appears a quote attributed to Farabundo Martí, leader of the 1932 uprising and founder of the Central American Socialist Party, emphasizing the necessity of guerrilla fighters to claim their own history: "When history cannot be written with a pen it must be written with a gun."

Along the bottom appears the slogan “El Salvador Vencerá,” meaning “El Salvador will overcome.” The phrase became widely used within Salvadoran solidarity movements during the 1980s, formed in response to the Salvadoran Civil War between the U.S.-backed Salvadoran government and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition of left-wing guerrilla groups. Item #2064.
