Nicaragua: Aquí no se rinde nadie (Nobody Surrenders Here) Poster (Circa 1979)

Poster from the Nicaraguan Revolution featuring the popular slogan “Aquí no se rinde nadie,” which translates from Spanish as “Nobody surrenders here.” The phrase is closely associated with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and was used to promote loyalty and resistance during the revolution to overthrow of the Somoza family dictatorship in Nicaragua, which occurred in 1979.

The words of Ricardo Morales Avilés, a Nicaraguan educator, poet, and leader of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), accompany a photograph by Esrom María depicting two guerrilla soldiers (one an injured older man, the other a young woman). Translated as “And there are always new swords and an old way of holding one’s head high,” Avilés’s words evoke the FSLN’s determination to confront conflict with dignity while relying on the continued resilience of the Nicaraguan people.
