Nicaragua: Aquí no se rinde nadie (Nobody Surrenders Here) Poster (Circa 1979)

Poster from the Nicaraguan Revolution featuring the popular slogan “Aquí no se rinde nadie,” which translates from Spanish as “Nobody surrenders here.” The phrase is closely associated with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and was used to promote loyalty and resistance during the revolution to overthrow of the Somoza family dictatorship in Nicaragua, which was eventually achieved in 1979.

The words of Ernesto Cardenal—a Nicaraguan Catholic priest, revolutionary, and member of the FSLN—accompany a photograph by Esrom María depicting a guerrilla soldier with two children. Translated as “We were not born to be pawns nor to be bosses, but to be brothers; we were born to be brothers,” Cardenal’s words emphasize the generational impact of the revolution and the sense of solidarity and camaraderie among the Nicaraguan people fighting for liberation.
