Mozambique Will Be Free: Frelimo Vencera Poster (1970)
Campaign poster produced by the Committee for a Free Mozambique advocating for the independence of Mozambique from Portuguese colonial rule. The phrase “FRELIMO has won,” translated from Portuguese, served as a slogan of the FRELIMO Mozambique Liberation Front party. Founded in 1962, this national movement in Mozambique fought for self-determination and the liberation of Mozambican people from Portugal. After independence, it became the country’s ruling democratic socialist political party and has governed since.
According to the Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), which also holds a copy of this poster in their collection, the soldier in the photograph is first Mozambique president Samora Machel, who governed from 1975 to 1986. A quote bellow the photograph likens the independence movement to the growth of a mango tree, the imagery and text emphasize dedication to younger generations and the movement’s deep roots in the communities and land of Mozambique. The metaphor suggests that sustained commitment and collective struggle will eventually bear fruit for the people. Item #2049.
