Nixon Tearing the Heart out of Indochina Poster (1971)

Scarce 1971 poster criticizing American President Richard Nixon and the country's involvement in the Vietnam War. The original image, titled “Nixon Tearing the Heart out of Indochina,” was created by prominent Cuban graphic designer and artist René Mederos. The composition depicts a map of Southeast Asia, with North Vietnam and Laos represented as a burning red hole in the map. A bird of prey bearing the face of Richard Nixon, with exaggerated vampiric fangs, grips the affected countries in its talons.

Although Nixon is directly depicted, the work reflects a broader critique by Mederos and OSPAAAL of American imperialism and militarism in the region.

Published by the Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL), with the organization’s logo in the lower right corner. OSPAAAL was established in Cuba in 1966 and produced anti-imperialist posters supporting socialism, armed liberation and solidarity among oppressed peoples.
