The Philippine Revolution Advances: Benefit for the New People's Army Poster (1978)

A 1978 poster designed by artist Rúpert García to benefit of the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Created to rally support and raise funds for the NPA’s campaign of guerrilla warfare against the kleptocratic regime of Ferdinand Marcos, the text denounces the greed of the ruling class while highlighting the exploitation, hardship, and desperation experienced by those affected by authoritarian rule.

García, an American Chicano visual artist known for his bold graphic style and involvement in the Third World poster movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s, depicts Bernabe Buscayno (known as Commander Dante), leader of the NPA, referencing his detention in 1976. Vivid and simple iconography is intertwined with political messaging, reflecting García’s practice of merging striking visual imagery with social messages.
