LaToya Ruby Frazier: The Last Cruze
Published on the occasion of the 2020 exhibition of the same name at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. American photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier documents the closure of the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio where the last Chevrolet Cruze was assembled. Frazier records, examines, and amplifies the voices of displaced workers, unpacking how the shift to overseas production disrupts families, communities, and livelihoods.
The publication brings together more than 60 full-color reproductions of prints paired with workers’ written testimonies, essays, and conversations with Frazier and contributors including Lynn Nottage, David Harvey, and Julia Reichert. Additionally, installation photographs evoke the original presentation, in which the gallery space was arranged to mirror the factory’s assembly lines.
As part of Frazier’s ongoing investigation into labor, family, community, and the working class, the exhibition and resulting publication highlights the experiences of those most affected by the displacement of jobs from GM and the profound impact on the surrounding communities.
