8Vo: On The Outside

A retrospective survey of the work of London-based design studio 8vo, written by two of its three founders, Mark Holt and Hamish Muir. Presented in a chunky-format volume, fold-out inserts, time lines, essays by the founders, and a rich selection of projects and ephemera guides readers through a history of 8vo’s boundary-pushing designs.

In addition to the firms projects the cult design journal Octavo, published by 8vo in eight issues between 1986 and 1992, is reproduced and examined in depth. Its heavy structural and typographic aesthetic fused modernist principles with the studio’s distinctive voice, positioning the work in deliberate opposition to the prevailing traditional English aesthetic.

Regarded as one of the most influential design studios of the 1980s, 8vo combined traditional craft-based methods with experimental aesthetics that anticipated the technology-driven visual culture of the 1990s. By pushing the boundaries of commercial design and reimagining the potential of traditional production technologies, 8vo helped pave the way for the digitally informed aesthetics that followed.
