The Collected Hairy Who Publications 1966-1969
Published to accompany the 2015 exhibition What Nerve! Alternative Figures in American Art at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York. Presents the complete collection of printed materials produced by the Hairy Who, a group of six American artists who chose to exhibit together from 1966 to 1969. Comprising Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Suellen Rocca, and Karl Wirsum, the Hairy Who organized five exhibitions and produced a wide range of works that challenged the predominant Pop style, instead exploring new figurative painting approaches marked by bright colors, verbal play, and visual puns.
Also known for their posters, buttons, and comic-book-formatted artists' books, the group embraced ephemera and artists' books as a means of creating a more immersive way to engage with their work. Considered among the earliest full-color, self-published examples of artists' books, this complete presentation and survey offers important insight into post-1960s ephemera and the development of the genre. Out of print. Item #2022.
