Imagination of Letters Poster (1993)
An elegantly designed and produced exhibition poster for the Ginza Graphic Gallery’s (GGG) 1993 show Imagination of Letters, celebrating the diversity of Japanese lettering. Highlighting various influences and styles such as Katakana, Hiragana, Chinese characters, vertical and horizontal formatting, and both Eastern and Western design approaches, the exhibition showcased letters as a central and powerful element in graphic design. The characters are embossed onto the poster in glossy black.
Held in collaboration with the periodical Vertical and Horizontal Type by Japan's leading font foundry, Morisawa, to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the exhibition featured 41 artists previously published in the magazine. Each artist created a poster centered on letters as the guiding theme, exploring unique ways that words, letters, and images interact with one another.
The exhibition poster was designed by renowned Japanese graphic designer Ikko Tanaka, known for his bold geometries and typography, subtly influenced by traditional Japanese aesthetics. Tanaka is also credited with developing the visual identity of the popular clothing and lifestyle brand Muji.
