Miranda July: The Missing Movie Report Poster (1996)
Poster documenting Miranda July’s The Missing Movie Project, in which she recorded imagined, unmade films from individuals historically underrepresented in cinema, particularly girls and women of color, people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and elderly women.
Motivated by frustration with the lack of diversity in late 1990s cinema, July took to the streets Portland, Oregon, using a camera and tape recorder to document the public's unmade movie ideas. She also encouraged others to submit “Missing Movie Reports” from their own communities as a way of reclaiming voices often excluded from the big screen.
This poster features 24 such encounters, including photographs of the women alongside their responses to the question: “If you could make a movie, what would it be about?” A rare, early Miranda July project. Item #1895.
Condition: Good–; .25" tape pull running along both left and right edges; moderate speckling water damage on bottom half of poster; three larger water stains, including two 1" blotches and one 19" vertical drip line starting at the lower third of poster and running down the center; light edgewear; pinhole tears at all four corners; .5" closed tear at top edge; overall toning/fading to thermal blueprint paper.
