Caracol: Volume 1 (First Year), 12 Bound Issues
The entire first year of the Chicano periodical Caracol, a journal published in San Antonio from September 1974 until October 1977. These issues run from the first issue in September 1974 through August of 1975.
Caracol was established to be a forum of Chicano consciousness and to present contemporary politics and the arts from a Hispanic point of view. The title, which means "snail" in Spanish evokes a spiral of self-expansion and was inspired by Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem "The Chambered Nautilus."
Issues include fiction, poetry, political news and commentary, women's rights, reviews and reporting on Chicano arts, plus artworks such as woodcuts and comics. Issues were offset printed on newsprint and staplebound. Text in Spanish and English. A rare collection of the first year of this scarce Chicano periodical. Item #1890.
Condition: Very Good, light edgewear and scuffing to covers; 3" horizontal area of glue residue (?) and lifting to paper on back cover; toning to newsprint pages; now in a custom-made protective mylar jacket.
