Sets and Pieces: Keith Sonnier at Castelli Warehouse (1970)

Castelli Warehouse, an industrial loft on Manhattan’s west side established by renowned art dealer Leo Castelli, played a pivotal role in the emergence of alternative art spaces and the promotion of avant-garde art in New York City. Regarded as one of the first "alternative" art venues in the city, the space was active from 1968 to 1971 and became known for exhibiting large-scale, process-oriented, and site-specific works that defined the experimental art scene of the late 1960s.
Post-minimalist sculptor Keith Sonnier was among the first artists to incorporate light into sculpture. The works displayed at Castelli Warehouse featured an array of lighting elements, mirrors, glass, fabrics, and other materials. These installations served as the backdrop for the recorded and documented performances of American video and performance artist Tina Girouard, whose live “activations” animated the exhibition space.
Richard Landry, a trained musician, offers a unique perspective on the New York avant-garde movement of the 1970s. Later turning to photography to supplement his income, he documented performances, installations, and exhibitions by his peers and artist friends, as in this instance. His work provides an insider’s view of many key figures of the era, including Keith Sonnier, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, and others. Item #1881.
