Abraham Munting: Banana Fruit Hand-Colored Etching (From 1696)

An antique, hand-colored etching by renowned Dutch botanist and botanical artist Abraham Munting from the year 1696. Munting’s botanical illustrations are celebrated for breaking with traditional conventions—rather than portraying plants in purely scientific isolation, he set them against classical or pastoral landscapes, often floating in midair with little regard for perspective or scale.

Like his best-known work, Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen, this etching was published posthumously following Munting’s death in 1683. It features a cut branch from a banana tree alongside a bisected banana, both rendered in vibrant yellows and greens. The etching includes the inscription “Musa Fructus” on a plaque below the stem, which is Latin for “Banana Fruit.”
