A collage artist and pioneer of mail art, Johnson was particularly interested in the act of “on-sending,” in which a recipient would alter or add to a piece of mail before forwarding it to someone else. This collaborative, evolving style of communication became the foundation of the New York Correspondence School—an underground network of artists, friends and strangers, and the primary focus of this exhibition.
