Carleton Watkins: The Stanford Albums
150 black-and-white photographs of Carleton Watkins' notable works from the Stanford University Libraries Special Collections, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the congressional act that preserved Yosemite Valley and launched the U.S. national park system. The resulting publication, which accompanied the 2014 exhibition of the same name, offers a closer look at three prominent landscapes featured in Watkins' photography of the American West: Yosemite Valley (1861 and 1865-66), the Pacific Coast (1862-76), and the Columbia River and Oregon (1867 and 1870).
The albums are accompanied by 15 essays from David M. Kennedy, Alexander Nemerov, Richard White, and others. Out of print.
