Ten Days in Japan
A rare copy of Lum's 1930s travel guide to Japan, written and illustrated by the artist under the pseudonym 'Berll Lum' for Canadian Pacific Railway. Having spent time in Japan learning traditional printing techniques, Lum’s guide offers vignettes of what she considered the most important and interesting sights to see in Japan at the time, complemented by beautiful illustrations in both color and black and white.
Lum, who had a background in printmaking from the Art Institute of Chicago, first traveled to Japan on her honeymoon in 1903. During this trip, she studied the basics of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e printing methods. She soon became deeply involved in the Arts and Crafts movement, later returning to Japan to further study woodcut printing, engraving, and coloring techniques, implementing them in her personal printing practices and illustrated publications. Condition: Good, soiling on the title page and front and back covers, with a 1” scratch on the front cover and a smattering of blue smudges on the back cover. Light edgewear with closed tears along the bottom and outside edges of the wrapped paper covers, all no larger than ⅜”. Two chips: one on the outside edge of the front cover and one on the bottom edge of the back cover, each measuring 0.75”. Small corner bumps on all four corners and a 1” tear along the bottom of the spine. Some rust on the staples visible in the gutter.
