The Oracle of Southern California: Vol.1, Issue 9
The Oracle of Southern California, a newspaper based in Los Angeles and a member of the Underground Press Syndicate, was part of a network of countercultural newspapers and magazines from the 1960s. Inspired by the San Francisco Oracle, The Oracle of So. Calif. frequently featured psychedelic art and neo-pagan ideologies, capturing the spirit of the hippie and psychedelic counterculture.
Published for only one year (1967–1968), its ninth issue, released in January 1968, covered topics such as Indigenous and Native American ideologies and knowledge, psychedelics, sex, religion, and music. It also included interviews with Hugh Romney and Craig Carpenter, along with artwork by Nick Kaaren, Ray Fragosa, Kathy Eyelash, Liz Green, and others. Item #1752.
Condition: Very Good-, folded as issued, edgewear along the spine including a small .25” hole where the spine meets the horizontal fold; a few .25” closed tears along the top and bottom edge of the first three and last two pages; toning to newsprint.
