The Dinner Party: SFMoMA Original Exhibition Brochure (1979)
The oversize catalog for the first original museum tour of Judy Chicago's feminist masterpiece, The Dinner Party. The work depicts 39 place settings at its table with 999 women honorees registered on the floor tiles ("the Heritage Floor"). This exhibition brochure details each plate/place setting with an image and description, along with dates, names and information about the 999 honorees grouped around each plate setting based on "common experiences, achievements, historic periods, or places of origin." It took a team of 20 researchers over two years to complete the information about the women represented on the Heritage Floor. The Dinner Party itself took five years to complete, and included the efforts of hundreds of individuals.
The Elizabeth A. Sackler Foundation donated The Dinner Party to the Brooklyn Museum, where it is now permanently housed in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. Item #1538.
