Technics and Creativity: Gemini G.E.L. Catalog with Jasper Johns "Target" and Paint Set (1971)
The unique catalog and book object produced by MoMA and Gemini G.E.L. for their 1971 exhibit of prints and multiples by artists including Johns, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Litchtenstein, Frank Stella and others. On the inside of the box is a Jasper Johns blank "Target" with three paint discs and a brush for the owner to paint their own target work in "collaboration" with Johns. There is a spot for the owner to sign their name next to Johns'. The Jasper Johns signature is printed in a graphite colored ink and looks surprisingly like an original signature. This item is often mistaken as "signed by Jasper Johns," including some currently listed as such online.
The booklet includes a catalogue raisonne of Gemini's complete production of prints at multiples made at their workshop in California to date. With several color gatefolds. Item #1516.
Condition: Near fine, except for previous owner's name in Sharpie-like felt pen on cover of catalog; a 3/8" chip along at top of case (see last detail photo); paint discs are fully intact and unused; the original paint brush and foam protective liner, as well as the MoMA explanatory flyer insert, are all present.
