Mike Kelley: The Greatest Tragedy of President Clinton's Administration [Poster, 1999]

The double-sided poster issued on the occassion of Kelley's "Odd Man Out" solo exhibit at Patrick Painter, Inc. in Santa Monica in 1999. The poster includes a statement on the right to health care, a heightened concern for sexual well-being, and a call to dispense of America's puritan heritage. The back of the poster tells the story of a man who stalked Steven Spielberg, with fantasies of harming and raping the famous film director.

The poster was included in the show as part of the work entitled "The Secret," now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kelley was a beloved and influential artist who throughout his career investigated memory, trauma, and repression via a variety of mediums and objects, including stuff animals. Kelley died by an apparent suicide in 2012. Item #1398.
