Read & Wipe Sonoma County Side Show Periodical Collection (1974-1976); 15 Issues

A collection of 15 issues of this scarce and somewhat obscure alternative periodical published in the mid-1970s in Healdsburg, California, north of Santa Rosa. The issues feature a mix of writing, politics, interviews, art and comics, plus community news with a counterculture, satirical bent and sometimes circus vibe.

Submissions were welcomed, both for writing and artwork/comics and included rotating columns, community news and politics, fiction and poetry, recipes, and more. Topics covered include urban planning/development, recycling, natural childbirth, food cooperatives, bicycling and maintenance, arts/crafts and DIY how-to projects, local festivals and performers, community calendars, women's rights, and more.

Early issues state that the periodical was "Published on the last Friday of every month" but the issue chronology is somewhat cryptic, with one issue noting an issue number (No. 6) while others use horoscope signs (Taurus, Aquarius, Virgo) plus identifiers are such as "Roll 1, Sheet 2" and "Act II, Scene 1" or simply "Roll XI".

Several issues include this colophon: "Read and Wipe's Side Show is written, drawn and produced in the Dry Creek Hills, printed in Marin County, and brought to you once a month by Steve Beigel, Patti Wipe [Beigel], Art Read, Debby Bloomfield, Moscalito, Dr. Jefferson Buckshaw, Bong the Magician, and the various Secret Agents X-12".

Included in the collection is  an "Extra!" flyer requesting submissions for the publication's name prior to its first issue, with the winning moniker submitted by a Ben Saloon. Other title submissions included the Fitch Mountain News, Fitch Mountain Flatulence, The Martian Noseflute, Wreck Gazette, and others

Issues included are (presumed) No. 1 announcing the name (1974), Roll 1 Sheet 2, Roll 1 Sheet 3 (1975), Roll 4 (Pisces), Roll 5 (Aires), No. 6 (Taurus), Roll 7 (Gemini), Roll 8 (Cancer), Roll IX (Leo), Roll X (Virgo), Roll XI (Libra), Roll 12 (Scorpio), Act II Scene 1 (1976), Act II Scene II (Aquarius), and May 1976 (Taurus). Item #1391.

Condition: Overall Very Good, age toning to most issues; a few with soiling/scuffing to covers; one issue with water damage/coffee stains to pages; most issues with previous owner's name in pen on back cover; some issues with slight book must fragrance.
