Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College, 1933-1957

The beautiful and inspiring survey on the legendary Black Mountain College that accompanied the wonderful recent ICA Boston exhibit, curated by Helen Molesworth. Though it operated for only 24 years, this pioneering school played a significant role in fostering avant-garde art, music, dance, and poetry, and an astonishing number of important artists taught or studied there. Among the instructors were Josef and Anni Albers, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, and Willem de Kooning, and students included Ruth Asawa, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly.

Leap Before You Look is an exploration of this experimental school, founded in 1933 by John Riceas an experiment in making artistic experience central to learning. Essays from scholars explore diverse aspects of the College - everything from its farm program to the influence of Bauhaus principles, and the people and ideas that gave it such a lasting impact. Hundreds of images of the work, people and archival photos of the college. The best, most comprehensive and richly illustrated book on Black Mountain College! Item #1184.
