Collection of 89 Family Dog Productions Concert Postcards

A collection of 89 concert postcards produced by Family Dog Productions during the heyday of the Bay Area psychedelic music scene.

Chet Helms was manager of Big Brother and the Holding Company, which famously added Janis Joplin as its singer for a period. Helms formed Family Dog Productions, producing concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium alongside a young Bill Graham. Helms and Family Dog hired a group of young artists to design the graphics for their posters and handbills, who became know as The Big 5 of psychedelic art: Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse (aka Mouse Studios) and Wes Willson. All are represented in this collection. Other artists with work in the collection include Paul Zavorskas, Bill Henry, Jack Hatfield, Denis Nolan, Bob Schnepf, Chris Johnson, Robert Fried, Tom Glass, Neon Park, Greg Irons, and others.

Most cards are 5" x 7". About 18 cards (mostly those printed in black and white) are sized 4.75" x 6.5". Of the cards, 77 include the psychedelic Family Dog "Place Stamp Here" logo/drawing on the back (see image) in different ink colors; 4 cards have the plain box with "Place Stamp Here," 5 have the bulk rate permit box, and 3 are blank.

The official Family Dog website includes 159 artwork images - so if it is accurate and includes all artwork produced - this collection of 89 cards constitutes over half of all the artwork produced for Family Dog Productions. Some duplicates are available individually - inquire.
