A collection of 30 issues spanning the years 1944 to 1967 of the influential west coast architecture magazine known for its “Case Study Houses” Program. In 1945 the magazine proposed to “begin immediately the study, planning, actual design and construction of eight houses, each to fulfill the specifications of a special living problem in the Southern California area.” The houses became icons of the Mid-Century modernist movement. The cover design and focus of the magazine was revolutionary at the time and a direct challenge to the prominence of the east coast as the center of architecture in the U.S. The magazine included exceptional architectural photography by the likes of Julius Shulman, Marvin Rand and others.
Architects and artists covered in the collection present a who’s who of Mid-Century modernism and design, including Pierre Koenig, Gyorgy Kepes, Alfred Neumann, Ettore Sottsass, Robert Venturi, Frei Otto, Louis Kahn, Mies van der Rohe, Herman Miller, Saul Bass, Richard Neutra, Herbert Matter, Anni Albers, Harry Seidler, Walter Gropius, William Wurster, Greene & Greene, Ester McCoy, SOM, Isamu Noguchi, Gio Ponti, Dore Ashton, Max Bill, Marcel Breuer, Hans Hollein, Yona Friedman, George Nelson, Herber Bayer, John Lautner and many, many others. A wonderful collection featuring thousands of images of mid-Century design.
